Pastoral Work
The vision statement of the pastoral apostolate in the Province is: “Faced with the challenges of today we, the Jesuit Pastors of Dumka-Raiganj Province, commit ourselves to the mission of Jesus Christ to reconcile people with God, with one another, with creation by building up a just and humane society.”
Dumka-Raiganj Province is working in 14 parishes in the three Dioceses of Dumka, Raiganj and Purnea in the States of Jharkhand, Bengal and Bihar: Majilispur, Chilimpur, Nichamari and Nichitpur in West Bengal; Mariampahar, Hathimara, Jibonpur, Murguni, Saltipokhar, Nunbatta, Mangrutikur, Jirulia and Purana Kesri in Jharkhand; and Bhelwa in Bihar.
According to a survey conducted by parish priests in 2019-20, the parishes have a total of 76 village Mass centres, 6470 Catholic families with a total of 33,054 faithful. The main activities in the parish are pastoral care of the Catholics administration of the sacraments, family visits, faith formation of adults, faith formation of children in hostels and schools, and collaborating with lay associations such as baba dol (men’s group), mahila sangh (ladies group), youth group, kurus bir (crusaders) for children, and catechists’ groups. The parish groups are the backbone of the community and serve the whole community in various ways. Parish priests keep themselves open to suggestions and ideas which will help them to organize the parish life and to achieve the vision of the pastoral ministry.
